+"xritedev application" fails to launch at startup

After installation of i1Publish on a Windows XP computer, some customers have experienced an error message similar to 'xritedev application encountered a problem and needs to close'.

The "xritedev application" is a service (on Windows and Mac) that works in the background of the system. It is the "X-Rite Device Services" (XRD) that is responsible for enabling the communication between attached instruments like i1, iO, iSis, etc... and software like i1Profiler or ColorPort. The XRD Service will automatically be started on every system reboot, goes then into a sleep mode, and will be awakened when doing measurements within the softwaree program.

The error message indicates that the XRD Service could not be started at system startup. This can be related to a conflict with other startup items that are connected to legacy X-Rite software like i1Match, ProfileMaker, MonacoProfiler if installed on the same computer.

To solve the issue, please go to menu Start > All Programs > Startup and delete shortcuts for 'ProfileReminder' and/or 'Logo Calibration Loader'.

If deleting the startup items fails to correct this issue, try the following:

  1. Close the i1Profiler and/or ColorMunki program
  2. Unplug all X-Rite measurement devices
  3. Uninstall X-Rite Device Services using “Add/Remove Programs” in Control Panel
  4. Restart computer (even if not requested by uninstaller)
  5. Install the latest version of X-Rite Device Services (XRD 2.1.1 as of 3/21/2012) and restart the computer

Note: This has been only been reported on Windows XP, but there is a chance that this symptom might also occur on other Windows operating systems.
