When did you first understand the importance of color to your workflow?
The importance of color has always been a critical part of my photography. Even
back in the day of shooting neg film and transparency accurate color was
paramount. With the introduction of digital, color management became even
more important and harder to manage due to the digital variables that were now
part of the equation. Scanning negs and printing on the Kodak Pegasus machine
was my first introduction to color management back in the year 2000. My
wedding and portrait studio back then, was one of the first in Australia to
embrace digital printing. Having worked in a color Lab for many years, the
understanding of good color printing was extremely beneficial in comprehending
color management concepts.
How is color management related to your artistic process?
As a photographer my goal is to bring my artistic vision to life in a beautifully
crafted print. To do this effectively I want to make sure that what I see on my
screen is properly translated to the final print and the paper stock of choice. The
most critical part of the equation for me is accurate monitor and custom paper
profiles.
Give an example of the ways in which color management has made a difference
in your work. What value did it bring?
In a nutshell, being color managed is all about efficiency and minimising any
potential waste like paper and inks. Great prints are not an accident. Providing
consistent results to my clients is very important.
How important are the latest color management tools in today’s industry? Why?
The latest color management tools give us and incredible amount of accuracy
and control. In the professional imaging world, accurate color reproduction along
with consistency is what every image maker should hand their hat on.
