+Troubleshoot conflicts with Graphic Card/VideoLUTs - Win 7

Windows 7 is the first version of Windows that can load the calibration curves of a monitor profile to the video LUTs without needing to restart the computer. However, Windows 7 is not set up by default to do it. Please follow these steps to set it up:

  • Make sure to log on with Administrator rights.

  • Set up Windows 7 to load calibration curves to the video LUTs by default. Open Control Panel and then"‘Color Management", a Color Management setup window for the User Level appears. In the "Devices" tab, add a check to "Use My Settings for this Device". Make sure that the X-Rite created monitor profile is selected as the default. Click on the "Advanced" tab and check the box to "Use Windows Display Calibration" to control loading the video LUTs.

    • Note: if the option "Use Windows Display Calibration" is grayed out, click on "Change System Defaults" bottom left in the window. A Color Management setup window for the System Level appears. Do not apply any changes for assigned profiles here. Click on "Advanced" tab and select the option to "Use Windows Display Calibration". Select "Close" and the exit "Color Management".

  • Note: XRGamma can now be removed from the Start -> Programs -> Startup menu if desired, however,  it should not cause any conflict if it continues to reside here.

If the aforementioned hints do not help solving the issues, check the following:

  • Make sure that  a dedicated vendor-specific driver for the computer's graphics card  is installed and up to date (do not use system’s generic drivers). To verify this, open "Display" in Control Panel and then select "Change display settings" > "Advanced settings" > "Adapter" > "Properties" > "Driver" and run an "Update Driver" procedure.

  • If present, uninstall additional vendor-specific color control tools for your graphic card (e.g. uninstall ATI Catalyst Control Center). Note: do NOT delete the card’s driver itself. To see if additional software is installed, go to Control Panel > "Programs and Features", locate appropriate software, and uninstall it.

  • Disable Windows Defender. Open Control Panel "Windows Defender", select "Tools" > "Options" > "Administrator". Uncheck the option to "Use This Program". Select "Save" and then "Close".   • Disable User Account Control (UAC). Open Control Panel > "User Accounts" and select "Change User Account Control Settings". Drag the slider down to "Never Notify" and click "OK". Restart the computer. Note: it might be necessary to reinstall the X-Rite profiling software with UAC set to never notify.   • Turn off the system’s semi-transparency "Aero" desktop theme.  Go to Control Panel and then open "Personalization".  Scroll down to select "Windows 7 Basic" theme instead of a "Windows Aero" theme.  Note: If an "Aero" mode is selected,  i1Profiler Software will temporarily change to "Classic / Basic" mode before taking measurements on the monitor.

  • Windows Firewall or third-party security tools can block "XRGamma". Add "XRGamma.exe" to the program exceptions list. "XRGamma.exe" can be found in: C:\Program Files (Program Files (x86) on 64-bit) \X-Rite\i1Profiler in i1Profiler software or: C:\Program Files (Program Files (x86) on 64-bit) \X-Rite\ColorMunki Display for ColorMunki Display users.

  • Create an ICC profile according to a different version. This setting can be found in the i1Profiler software in step ‘Profile Settings’. In ColorMunki Display, select "File" > "Preferences" to select "Version 4" or Version 2" display profiles.
